Parenting Deaf Children: Exploring Relationships Between Resolution of Diagnosis, Parenting Styles and Morale, and Perceived Child Vulnerability

Abstract Raising a deaf child can have significant impacts on parents’ wellbeing, their relationship with the child, and ability to parent effectively. Using an online survey, this study explored two questions: First, examine whether hearing parents treat perceive children differently while controlling for characteristics (including resolution of diagnosis), specifically in terms parenting styles perceived vulnerability. Second, resolve feelings about child’s loss diagnosis was related morale, they as vulnerable. A total 84 aged 5–12 years completed 32 those also reported second without same age range. They were asked answer questions from Reaction Diagnosis Interview, complete several questionnaires addressing vulnerability, styles. Findings suggest that unresolved linked lower morale greater perception Sibling comparisons indicated higher vulnerability score compared sibling. No sibling differences found regarding These findings experience having negative impact particularly when remain diagnosis, highlighting need targeted supports further research.
